Great blog, Bill

IMO, Luke Schenn > AMac

Mainly because, unlike MacDonald, Schenn actually does some things very well. He is consistently physical and with Grossmann gone, that is a necessity. As you pointed out, he both blocks shots well and makes a good first pass out of the zone. He also does a decent job of getting shots through on the net from the point. His skating will never be a strong point, but that can be mitigated by moving the puck and pairing him with a mobile partner.

AMac, OTOH, really does nothing exceedingly well, IMO. He is a generic 4/5 dman and overpaid. I would much rather have Luke Schenn at 3.6 million for only 1 more year on my roster, than Andrew MacDonald at 5 million for 5 more years.

Context is important. It can be tough for a player to find a rhythm when he is constantly looking over his shoulder, knowing that he has a very slim margin of error before getting scratched. Schenn handled that pressure commendably.

Berube wasn't at the top of his game with his decision making regarding scratches.

And less is definitely more with Luke regarding the puck on his stick.

Wrong Stephen/Steven King . This one may not have been much of a writer but he was a pretty good AHL forward.

I know the first name was spelled differently. On a more serious note, what a shame about Dmitri Tertyshny. Not even from a hockey perspective, being killed that tragically at such a young age is heartbreaking. I didn't know the part about never meeting his unborn son. Makes it even more sad.

I may be in the minority, but I am in the camp that would like to keep L Schenn around. He is a serviceable guy to help bide some time for the young prospects to develop.

That being said I would trade him in the right deal. I just don't think I would be actively shopping him at the moment.

Isn't it amazing that Luke Schenn can't be discussed without it turning into a MacDonald bashing? It's sad really LOL

I'm told I have a man crush on MacDonald. What's the opposite of that?

A new off-season record.

Need to give BiggE a scotch and a guitar and get him away from the keyboard.

Can the Flyers keep both Schenn and Gudas? They seem to bring nearly the same skillset to the team.

The Flyers have changed the ratio of mobile puck skilled defenseman versus the more physical defensive defenseman types, with the subtraction of Grossmann, and the addition of Medvedev. Not sure how much Gudas can be counted on, so I think it's a good idea that they hang on to Schenn for now, to help with a physical element on the backend.

I like Luke Schenn. I thought he was very good back in 12-13. But unfortunately since then he just hasn't played well enough to be thought of as more than a 3rd pairing guy. And since he's a $3.6m UFA and the Flyers are close to the cap, he does seem like the guy most likely to be traded. Especially since Hextall added Gudas back in March.

Bashing our D is like grabbing low-hanging fruit. It'll be nice when that's no longer the case, but until then...
